iPhone speaker sounds muffled? Causes and fixes

In short

A muffled iPhone speaker is usually caused by water or lint in the speaker grille, or by a case or screen protector covering it. Point the speaker down and play a low tone to push water out, clean the grille gently with a soft, dry brush, and remove the case. Then test the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings › Sounds & Haptics: if it plays nothing or the speaker button is dimmed, the speaker may need service.

1. Get the water out

If the sound changed after the iPhone got wet, water is the most likely cause. Apple says placing the iPhone speaker side down on a cloth may help it drip out, and that sound may stay reduced until the water evaporates.

To speed it up, play a low tone around 165 Hz at full volume with the speaker pointing down. The vibration pushes droplets through the grille. Wavex does this in 10 to 30 seconds through both speakers; repeat two or three times if needed. Full steps: how to get water out of your iPhone speaker.

2. Clean the speaker grille

Pocket lint and dust collect in the speaker and receiver openings over time. Apple's advice is to check the openings for blockage and clean them gently with a small, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry. Don't use pins, toothpicks or liquids: they can damage the mesh or push dirt further in.

3. Remove the case and screen protector

Some cases and films partly cover the bottom speaker or the receiver at the top. Take them off and listen again. If the sound is clearer, the case is the problem.

4. Rule out settings

5. Test the speaker itself

Open Settings › Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth. If you hear nothing, or the speaker button on the slider is dimmed, Apple says the speaker might need service. You can also use the stereo test in Wavex to compare the top and bottom speakers.

Fix a muffled iPhone speaker

  1. Push out any water. Turn the volume up, point the speaker down and play a low tone for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat if needed.
  2. Brush the grille. Clean the speaker and receiver openings with a small, soft, dry brush.
  3. Take off the case. Remove the case, film or screen protector and listen again.
  4. Check sound settings. Turn off silent mode and Do Not Disturb, and disconnect Bluetooth audio.
  5. Run Apple's speaker test. Drag the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings › Sounds & Haptics. No sound means the speaker may need service.

Questions and answers

Why does my iPhone speaker sound muffled after it got wet?

Water is sitting in the speaker grille, so sound has to pass through it. It usually clears as the water evaporates, and a low tone can push most of it out within a minute.

Can I clean my iPhone speaker with a toothpick or needle?

It's not a good idea. Apple recommends a small, soft-bristled brush that is clean and dry. Sharp objects can puncture the mesh or push dirt deeper.

Why is only one speaker quiet?

iPhone plays stereo through the bottom speaker and the receiver at the top. Water or lint can affect just one of them. A stereo test that plays each channel separately helps you tell which one.

When should I contact Apple?

If the Ringtone and Alerts slider in Settings plays no sound, the speaker button is dimmed, or the sound is still distorted after drying and cleaning, the speaker may need service.
